Migraine Headache Symptoms – The Four Stages
Migraine is more than a headache; it is a complete experience with four distinct phases. If you are prone to migraine with aura, i.e.“classic” migraine, you will experience all four stages. If you are a “common” migraine sufferer, you too go through the four stages, though they may not be as pronounced.
Prodrome Stage
Believe it or not, you can begin to feel the symptoms of migraine one to two days prior to the actual migraine headache. Feelings during this stage vary greatly depending upon the individual. Your head may begin to ache and you may be tired and irritable. On the other hand, you may feel sudden elation and a heightened sense of relaxation. Or you may even get an unusual burst of energy. The key is to recognize your prodome signs and strive to ward off the migraine.
Aura Stage
If you are prone to common migraine you will not experience this stage. Aura accompanies classic migraines and can begin anywhere from five minutes to a full hour before the headache comes on. These visual disturbances are often described as curved, zig-zags that flash very rapidly. They can start in one corner of your vision and work their way around. Be prepared; for when the aura eventually fades the pain is soon to follow.
Headache Stage
The headache phase can last from three hours to three days. You will most likely feel the throbbing pain on one side of your head or behind your eyes. Your stomach may be upset and you may experience nausea and vomiting. During this phase you may be very sensitive to light, sound and smell.
Postdrome Stage
Many people describe the period following the headache as being “hung over.” Chances are you will be wiped out and feel as if you are in a fog. Your may continue to feel a dull ache in your head. You neck and stomach may be sore and light can still bother your eyes. You will begin to gradually feel better; this can take 24-36 hours.
As you can see migraine is so much more than a headache. Your body goes through an extraordinary series of events.
